Karaoke with Bhumika!

A really good turn out of students, as well as a few teachers, for the much awaited Karaoke activity on a Friday night. Students from various levels participated and enjoyed singing songs of different genres. American, Japanese, Spanish, hip-hop, classics, just to name a few.

We were also fortunate to have 2 students, Kai and Saharu, who are professional Gospel/R&B singers, participate that evening. Even more amazing was that they only sang songs in English. They definitely got everyone's attention with their jaw dropping performances every time they sang.
It was a very fun & successful evening.

Let's eat Korean food!

On Friday, May 22, SBLA students met with Teacher Kurt for some delicious Korean food at BCD Tofu in Torrance. BCD Tofu specializes in soondubu, a spicy stew made with soft tofu and meat or seafood. Other dishes served at the restaurant include bulgogi (marinaded and thinly sliced grilled beef) and galbi (braised short ribs).

For many students, this experience was their first time trying Korean food, which is very popular in Southern California. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the food, but some students were a little surprised by how spicy it was. Because of this, they made sure to keep a large pitcher of ice water nearby at all times!

Join us next time for son Korean food and fun!

Memorial Day Hike

On Memorial Day, students from Language Systems SBLA joined TOEFL teacher Katie and a local hiking group on a hike through the hills of Rancho Palos Verdes.

This hike offers sweeping views of the ocean and Catalina Island.  It was a beautiful day in Southern California, and we enjoyed the fresh air, sunshine and exercise.

Thanks to everyone for coming out and I hope to see you all on the next hike!

Karaoke Night with teacher Bhumika

Last Friday night, I organized a karaoke activity for the South Bay campus students which turned out to be a total hit. About 15-20 students from levels 1 through 7 attended. The location was not so far from school and the karaoke place was awesome. We made a reservation for the largest karaoke room which fits about 20-25 people. It was nice to have our private room with a big screen tv mounted on the wall and fancy disco lights to match the mood perfectly.

For many, it was their first time to join a karaoke event, not just in US, but the first time ever, since karaoke is not so common in their country, yet. But that didn't stop anyone from singing solos, duets and chorus all night. Also, it provided a great opportunity for students from different levels to mingle outside of school and make new friends.

Songs of many genres and moods were sung throughout the 3 or so hours we spent there. From Mamma Mia to Bruno Mars, Britney Spears to Eminem, love songs, hip hop songs...a good mix of everything. We got lucky to have students like Keisuke (level 6) who surprisingly raps very well, and Hiromi (level 3) who mesmerized us with her choice of love songs.

It was a musical and memorable evening indeed. And the students can't wait for the next karaoke activity. They have promised they are going to practice and prepare more songs to be able to sing in English !! Good Job everyone !!
