US Open of Surfing!!

Every summer, student from our OC campus visit Huntington Beach for the US Open of Surfing. This is the oldest and biggest surfing competition in the United States.

For the past few years it has been sponsored by Vans, and the two together make up a very good example of true California beach culture. This event is not just about surfing, this year our students seemed pretty blown away at the insane skateboarding that we saw. It is truly amazing to see how crazy skaters can get these days.

The weather was perfect, and the surfing and skating made the day a perfect taste of California beach culture. This event will wrap up on Sunday July 31 with the finals of the men's and women's surfing competion. If you are in Southern California this weekend, get down to Huntington Beach!

The annual Orange County Fair

Friday July 22, and group of students in OC joined the program coordinator for a trip to the annual Orange County Fair. We had so much fun!

The OC fair is famous for BBQ and fried foods. We were able to eat delicious Texas style BBQ ribs. Some students tried the deep friend Oreo cookies and deep fried cheesecake. The deep friend cheese cake was actually really good.

We also went on a couple roller coasters and saw a heavy metal band perform. There were also a lot of cool animals to see at the fair like turkeys, sheep, ponys and alligators…yes! There was a 15-foot long alligator.

We took the public shuttle bus to and from the fair, so we saved money. Round trip bus fare plus an entrance ticket to the fair was only $7 altogether. That is a great deal! The fair will be open untilAugust 14, so if you are in Orange or LA county, you should go check it out! www.ocfair.com

Bowling and Korean BBQ!!

The end of term Bowl-O-Rama was a great success! We were a mixture of beginners and veterans, all enjoying the fellowship of this activity. Our high scorer was Ms. Yumi who scored 175.

All in all, we enjoyed bowling together but then it was time to eat. We decided to have Korean BBQ at Gen, again there were some beginners who had never eaten this style before and veterans who were excited to start chowing down. Oh boy did we chow down! In fact we ate ourselves into a food coma.

Finally, Gen kicked our party out, we said our "farewells" "enjoy your vacations" and parted ways as the sun began to set.

Food Trucks in America!!

A lot of students at Language Systems come from countries that have a vibrant street food culture. Because of certain strict laws and regulations in California, there is not a lot of street food out there. However, we do have a thing called food trucks in California, and you should check some of them out. A lot of cities have food truck gatherings, when many different types of food trucks all meet at one location to give people a really cool dining experience.

Recently, a group of Language Systems students from the OC campus went to a food truck gathering in Fullerton, CA. The most popular truck that night was a fusion truck that combined Korean food with Mexican and American food.

The most popular item that the students ordered was the pork belly sliders. Another favorite was a truck selling Cajun food, which comes from New Orleans, Louisiana. Sometimes ordering from the food trucks may seem a little expensive, but you are supporting a small “family business.” Check it out!

Next, two dancers from the group Calle Caliente treated everyone to a Salsa dancing lesson with students and teachers trying out their new moves on the dance floor.

The main event of the night was the annual Language Systems Talent Show. This year the theme of the competition was international dance from different countries. Four groups of students participated in the contest after they were chosen through video auditions a few days before the party. The groups included dancing from India, Thailand, Brazil, and Korea.

All the groups were very entertaining, but the judges could pick only one group.  In the end, the group doing a dance from India in the Bollywood style won the grand prize of $500.

After the talent show, the dance group Calle Calliente put on a special performance for everyone. Then the DJ came and everyone enjoyed dancing for the rest of the night!
