Bowling with Teacher Caroline!!!!

On Friday, June 26th, a group of LSI students joined Teacher Caroline after the evening graduation ceremony, to bowl at Shatto 39 Lanes!

Everyone had a fantastic time.

They especially enjoyed the company and good music.

Very fun atmosphere overall.

Getty Center with Daniel Landau!!

On Saturday June 20th, some very lucky students went to the Getty to enjoy outdoor music, evening views of the city, and to take in the refreshing summer exhibitions in a casual and spontaneous atmosphere.

The summer evening featured performances by your soon-to-be favorite bands, along with DJ sets to open and close the night. The live music for the evening was the genre-defying band "Shannon and the Clams."

It was a great time, and the students loved it :)

Fish Tacos with Bhumika!

South Bay students enjoyed a delicious lunch at Wahoo's Fish Tacos, just a short walk from the SB campus.

Wahoo's is a unique place in that it blends Mexican food with Brazilian and Asian flavors. There was something for everyone to enjoy!

After lunch, many students hung out and chatted in the gorgeous South Bay afternoon. We are lucky to have such a  yummy place nearby.

Indian Food with Teacher Sepideh!!!

Students and South Bay teacher Sepideh enjoyed some authentic Indian food at Bombay Tandoori. For some it was the first time trying Indian food. We chit chatted while eating lunch. The food was tasty and also reasonable.

Afterwards,we took a long walk in the beautiful South Coast Botanical Gardens. We encountered plants from all over the world and enjoyed the scenery.

The students were amazed by the size and the beauty of the garden.

Evening TOEFL Dinner Mexican Style!!!

Most of my students had not had good Mexican food so I took them to eat at La Parrilla in East Los Angeles.

They enjoyed the food, music and ambiance of the restaurant. The students also had a chance to try Mexican desserts such as flan and churros.

Although some of the students were hesitant at first to try the food they enjoyed it and asked if we could come back again.

Hammer Museum Visit

On May 2nd, I met the students at the Hammer Museum at 11:30a.m. We checked everyone in, got name badges and started at the art gallery that housed the architecture exhibit. They loved it and took lots of photos :) Then at 12:30 we took a half an hour guided tour of the artist Pedro Reyes' People's United Nations. The Level 6 and 7 students enjoyed it and said they understood about 80-90% of what the guide was saying whereas the lower level students only got 20% of what was being said.

Getting ready to start a fun day at the Hammer Museum :)
The group grew exponentially by the time we started the People's UN tour

By 1:15pm we ended up having lunch at two different restaurants, Denny's (for students who just wanted to have milkshakes and ice cream) and Panini Cafe (for students who wanted something proper) hahaha. We finished at the restaurants around 3:00pm. It took forever to take orders and then get everyone separate checks.

After lunch I gave the students the options of either calling it a day or going back with me to the museum. 12 students chose to go back while the others decided to go to Santa Monica. We finished at the museum at around 4:10pm. It was so much fun!!!

Basketball Tournament 2014

On Friday March 7, four LSI campuses competed in the Annual LSI Basketball Tournament. Each year students, teachers, and staff all look forward to this exciting opportunity to show school spirit as students cheer on their classmates who are competing in the games. Each school was represented by their colored T-shirts: Yellow for Downtown Los Angeles, Green for Northeast Los Angeles, Blue for Southeast Los Angeles and Red for Orange County. It was really exciting to see each school cheer for their classmates on the court.

Despite the unity displayed in this sudden expression of joy, on that same day three schools suffered defeat, and one school celebrated ultimate victory as they took the basketball trophy back to their campus. The trophy returned to our Southeast LA campus located in Torrance, the blue team, for the second year in a row! Congratulations to them, and congratulations to all the campuses for making the day so special and so filled with good memories. Now it's time to break out the soccer cleats and to get ready for the soccer tournament!

And this year, something new happened. About halfway through the first round of games, a group of students wearing yellow, blue, green and red T-shirts all got together in the stands and started dancing to the beat of Middle Eastern drums that the Saudi students had brought to the tournament. Students from all the campuses danced, cheered, and sang songs while our passionate and out-going Saudi students laid down a drum beat that could be heard and felt throughout the entire gymnasium. At that one moment, the cheering and dancing was not for one LSI campus in particular. It was more about a spontaneous celebration of the moment.  It was very cool to see this.
