Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens

On Saturday, April 29^th, a group of us headed to Pasadena to explore the beautiful Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens. 

Our first stop was the Library Exhibition Hall where we saw rare manuscripts, original works of Shakespeare, the Gutenberg bible and several other works from renowned writers. 

Across the way, we took a mini-tour of the Huntington mansion which had a massive art collection. 

We then had lunch at one of the cafes and had great chats all around.

The biggest attraction was, of course, the Botanical gardens. The Rose, Japanese, Chinese and Desert gardens were all breathtaking. 

Each garden boasted its own unique look and style. 

There were several gardens we didn't get to see due to time but we'll definitely come back there again.

Soccer Tournament 2016

                This year’s soccer tournament was nothing short of a success.  Students had the opportunity to experience an entirely new venue with state of the art fields and great weather.  The teams showed up in high spirits ready to claim the main prize for the most popular tournament of the year.

                The energy was high and the excitement of it all kept the cheers going through the entire tournament.  There were a couple of injuries, but that’s because the speed and intensity of the games were at an all time, competitive, high.  This year, the championship was re-claimed by last year’s defending champions from Language Systems OC. This team came ready to take on any team that stepped in the field against them and proved it with wide margin victories.

                During the tournament, LS had a camera crew interviewing students regarding their experience in school and their feelings about the tournament.  People took photo booth pictures with their friends while catching snacks and drinks, and of course, everyone had a positive experience.  Because let’s face it, we would rather be out of class and school to enjoy snacks and a game on a perfectly nice Friday morning and afternoon.

                Let’s hope that next year Language Systems holds the tournament in the same place and that every team trains with exuberance to prove that their school has the best to offer in athletics, while showing off their English skills with other students and on the field.  Let’s make next year just as great.

LA Dodgers VS LA Angels with Ty!!

15 students and 1 teacher from Language Systems' Orange County campus made the 1-hour commute up the 5 freeway to Los Angeles to see Southern California's biggest baseball rivalry - the Los Angeles Dodgers (blue) vs. the Los Angeles Angels (red).  

These games are called the freeway series because fans from both teams can travel up and down the 5 freeway from stadium to stadium.

It was a beautiful day for baseball, and the students got to experience Dodger Stadium, the 3rd oldest baseball stadium in all of America.  Only Boston's Fenway Park (built in 1911) and Chicago's Wrigley Field (built in 1914) are older. 

It was a close game, and in the end, the Angels won the game 7-6.  Throughout the whole game, the Orange County students kept shouting "Let's go Angels!" and the Dodger fans kept shouting "Angels suck!"  It was really fun! 

 The students all thought the rivalry and atmosphere were something really special.

Captain America: Civil War with DJ!!

We started off early on Saturday, meeting at 11:30 for brunch and a Movie instead of the usual afternoon routine.  Everyone seemed a little tired but was excited to see The Avengers go head to head; Team Captain America vs Team Iron Man.  

 

Team Iron Man included me (DJ), Jia Jia, and Nick both from China... Why: "We love his suit, cool technology, and arrogant humour"

Team Captain America was Andrea, Johnny, Zihao and Winaga.  Andrea and Johnny thought he was handsome. Zihao and Winaga liked that he always does the right thing and tries to protect his best friend.

Everyone agreed that our favorite hero was Spiderman! We had fun and the movie was really good... And we can't wait for the next big film!

Lunch and The Jungle Book with DJ!

We got off to a great start Saturday afternoon. We meet at the school parking lot and walked over to Del Amo Mall and debated what we should have for lunch.  Lazy Dog and Johnny Rockets offers discounted ticket if your eat with them but sometimes the service is slow at both.   Also it can be difficult to figure the final bill, tax and tip. 

 I suggested Stacked which offers you the convenience of ordering with an Ipad and paying the tabs separately. Also has a wide selection of typical America food Pizza, Pasta and if course Cheeseburgers. 

 After stuffing our faces, we were off to experience the Jungle Book in 3D.  The film is live action, and a little intense, but also very good and easy for most students to understand.  Only one Chinese girl fell asleep, unfortunately because she didn't really understand what was happening.  All in all, everyone enjoyed the film and our time together! Next week Captain America Civil War! 

How to play pool with DJ!

On Saturday the students and I met to play and learn to play pool.  I was surprised to see that our new Chinese student, Lisa, was actually a pretty good player and very competitive, like a mini version of me! 

The other students took instruction very well and after playing against each other on teams (South/North America vs Asia, Girls vs Boys, Older vs Young)  for a couple of hours we decided it was time to eat!  

After a little restaurant debate, we finally decided walk on over to Hamburger Habit and wow was it ever so delicious! I think we all developed a habit after this and look forward to enjoying each others company again soon!

Bowling Night With Scott

The South Bay students gathered together for a fun night of bowling. Omar 's smashed finger didn't stop him from cracking some pins. Masashi and Takuya provided plenty of energetic dancing and other entertaining moves. Best bowler award should probably go to Gerson for his nearly flawless technique. Tucked together closely and comfortably on three lanes, we all made the best of another great activity.
