Discover L.A.:Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden

Have you ever been to a Japanese garden in Japan? Well, there’s no need to get an expensive airplane ticket to experience a very accurate and beautiful recreation right here in the Los Angeles area. The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden is located in the Cal State Long Beach campus next to lot 16. Similar to the many gardens in Japan, details and intricate care were placed into creating an authentic and unique atmosphere.  It almost feels like it was transported all in one piece from Japan. The garden is popular for weddings, dates, and all photography enthusiasts. It’s a great place to relax, take a stroll, or even take a nap. It’s a hidden little treasure worth visiting.  So next time you want a charming or authentic experience, consider a trip to the CSULB campus.  Hours are: Tuesday through Friday from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm, Sunday from noon to 4:00pm, but it’s closed on Mondays and Saturdays.  Oh yeah, did I mention? It’s FREE.

LSI Summer Party 2014

On Friday, June 13^th all four LSI schools got together for the Annual Summer Party. This exciting event took place in Little Tokyo in Downtown Los Angeles. The theme this year was the World Cup! Everyone was wearing the sports jersey of their favorite team. Students answered trivia questions about the World Cup and won some amazing prizes. Several students from each of the four schools competed in a talent show called “LSI’s Got Talent!” All of the performances were great and the winners were two Brazilian singers named Marcos and Juan, who won the grand prize of $500! After the talent show was over and all of the delicious food was eaten, some surprise Brazilian samba dancers showed up and got the dance party started. A DJ played some great music and all of the students danced until it was time to go home. Everyone had so much fun and went home with many happy memories.

Father's Day Hike

On Sunday, June 15th, TOEFL teacher Katie of LSI South Bay LA took students on a four-mile hike in Rancho Palos Verdes at the Forrestal Nature Preserve. The students had the chance to meet local members of the South Bay hiking group and practice English with native speakers. It was great exercise with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Discover L.A.

California is not only an amazing locale for weather. California, and especially the Los Angeles area, has a lot of beautiful places to enjoy your time.

If you like the city life, Los Angeles is one of the biggest and with more variety of shows and museums. It’s actually the second biggest city in the USA after New York, and the majority of the movie stars who usually work in Hollywood live here too. You can visit Universal Studios or a lot of places in the city, which surely you have seen in movies, advertisement or music video clips.

      

      Santa Monica, which is merely a 30 minute drive from Downtown L.A., is one of the most famous beaches in the world. The image of the Ferris wheel and the rollercoaster on the pier is very famous and it is really cool to enjoy with the attractions that we have always watched on TV. It is not too expensive and surprisingly it is not too crowded.

      

    Close to Santa Monica you have Venice Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach, all of which are excellent places to spend your time walking on the beach or enjoying the relaxing life of their streets and restaurants. This is only LA, but California has thousands of amazing places to enjoy.

Memorial Day Hike and Picnic On The Ocean

   On Memorial Day, teacher Katie took the students hiking at the Donald Trump Golf Course. This is a four mile round trip hike with amazing views of the ocean. Katie runs a Torrance hiking group so we enjoyed a picnic with local residents of Torrance and the students had the chance to practice their English with native speakers. We enjoyed watching a pod of dolphins pass by us during the picnic, and the beautiful views of Catalina Island off the California coast. The weather was perfect and it was a terrific time was had by all.

Discover L.A.: The Melrose Trading Post

The Melrose Trading Post, a Sunday flea market, is a perfect place to search for just the right treasures to sit on an end table. Located at Fairfax High School, the antiques and collectibles flea market features more than 200 vendors and a food court where you can re-fuel during your shopping excursion. In addition, market shoppers can enjoy live music. It’s a great place to shop for gifts or things to decorate your apartment. Market hours are 9am to 5pm, and get there a little early to find parking. Also, make sure to carry cash as most vendors might not accept credit/ debit cards.

Soccer Tournament 2014!

On Friday, May 9th, LSI had its 7^th Annual Gold Cup Tournament at Whittier Narrows Regional Park. The defending champions were the South Bay Sharks. 

The tournament opened with the South Bay Sharks versus the Orange County Surfers.  Both teams played great defense, so it wasn’t a surprise when the game went into overtime.  After several nail-biting shots, the South Bay Sharks came out on top for the victory. In the meantime, the LA Angels faced a formidable Northeast LA Dragons team, and despite Northeast LA’s great preparation and attitude, LA was able to win and go on to the finals against South Bay. 

For the final championship game, excited fans from South Bay and LA geared up on the side lines with pom poms and encouraging chants for their respective teams.

The game started with both teams having a strong defense and the game remained tied until half-time. Then, LA made an amazing goal with a backwards kick over the heads of the defenders. That beautiful shot changed the momentum of the game and LA sailed on to win the 7^th Annual Gold Cup tournament, 4 - 1.  The fans went wild and ran onto the field to congratulate their team. Players and fans from South Bay also went on the field to congratulate the LA team on their win.

All four teams played well and represented their respective schools impressively. The players showed real sportsmanship and after the games finished, everyone sat together, had lunch, and enjoyed the beautiful California sun.
