Magnifico!

Last Saturday (January 25, 2014), LSI Teacher, Michael An'gileo, invited his students for an authentic Italian Lesson and delicious lunch at Andre's Italian Restaurant in Los Angeles (across from Farmers Market). The students feasted on large portions of spaghetti, lasagna, pizza, garlic bread and gelato. Magnifico! The Italian Lesson included ordering at a real Italian restaurant, for example, "Vorrei un piatto di spaghetti." Everyone left with a full stomach and speaking Italian. Wow, cool activity!

Griffith Observatory Hike

On January 24, eleven students ended up attending the Griffith Observatory Hike. We all bought a snack around the Hollywood/Western station and ate while walking up. After walking up the trail, we arrived at around 3:00pm and 9 students decided to wait around for the 4:15 show and were able to use their LSI student I.D. card to get a discount ($5.00). The remaining 9 students toured the exhibits, had coffee, relaxed on the grass, etc. until the start of the show. Right after the show, we started back around 5pm, and were able to make it back to Hollywood/Western Station before dark. Everyone enjoyed the activity very much, and would like to go again for the exercise and to see a different show.

Monster Jam

Last Saturday Night (1/25/14) a group of 18 LSI-OC students made the exciting trip to Angels Stadium in Anaheim, CA for the annual Monster Jam. The stadium was full of excited fans and there was a lot of action on the race track. For most of our LSI students, they had never seen anything like this before.
Actually, if you have never seen a freestyle monster truck event it is pretty hard to even imagine just how amazing it is to see these huge and powerful trucks jump sometimes 100 feet in the air only to come down, flip over, and then somehow flip back over and continue to perform. That's what happened twice last Saturday night. The winner of the freestyle event was the fan favorite - Grave Digger.

Hotel Cafe Concert

Last Saturday night LSI Downtown Students ventured to one of
Hollywood’s premier music venues – The Hotel Café. Despite the name,
it is neither a hotel nor a café, but instead a restaurant and bar
which features some of LA’s top talent playing in a comfortable,
ambient lounge setting. On this particular evening, the LSI students
came to the Hotel Café for the first time to hear the musical stylings
of Smithfield Bargain, an LA-based jazz-folk band, and “The Future
Scares Me,” a band on tour from Brooklyn, New York. Situated in one of
Hollywood’s best walking areas near Cahuenga and Hollywood Blvd, it’s
easy to find something to suit your fancy. Go to the Hotel Café on Monday
nights for a free show by some of the best studio musicians in
LA – It’s Super-Soul Mondays!

A New Beginning - Promises, Promises!

January is a month full of promises and new beginnings. Many people make a New Year’s resolution, or a decision to do something new or different, when the year begins.  At this time, people have a chance to change things in their lives and make plans for the future. If you haven’t decided what your New Year’s resolution will be, here are some common New Year's resolutions in the U.S. to get you started:
Lose those extra pounds gained during the holidays!
No more fast food for lunch! Try fresh fruit and vegetables and less processed food.
It is a common resolution, but one of the most difficult to fulfill.
It’s a time to learn how to cook or study a new language. The possibilities are endless!
Start making your own coffee and lunch at home! Stop eating out so much. Every little bit can add up, so even saving a little each day can make a difference.
Take a trip to Northern California and go hiking in some of the famous national parks. Take a wine tour or just hang out at the beach. There are a lot of new places to explore in California and even more possibilities in other states.
It is easier to be less stressed if you can keep your other resolutions. Meditating each day for a little or learning not to take things so seriously can really help keep your stress levels down!
Helping other people is a great way to feel happy.

After a walk around the school, we decided to ask some LSI employees what their resolutions would be. Here are their responses:
Mine is to volunteer more and of course, lose weight!” Ligia, Program Coordinator at LSI – LA
Have a haircut.” Paul, Assistant Program Coordinator and Teacher at LSI – LA
“Shave my beard!” Scott, teacher at LSI – LA
“To be less indecisive.” Tony, Foreign Student Advisor at LSI – LA
“To be a little more selfish.” Clelia, Front Office Assistant at LSI – LA
“To be rich!” Eriko, Assistant Manager at LSI – LA
“To finish writing at least another screen play.” Aluisio, Foreign Student Advisor at LSI - LA
“After volunteering with Caroline at the Midnight Mission, my New

Year's resolution is to volunteer with a non-profit organization at
least once a month.” Sushant, Assistant Program Coordinator and Teacher at LSI – LA

How about you? What are your resolutions for the New Year? Whatever you do, we wish you success and happiness in 2014!
